Pimco Chief, Others Spend Evening at Orangewood

Newport Beach-based Pacific Investment Management Co.’s co-chief executive, Bill Thompson, and about 20 others from the bond fund manager spent an evening with foster children as part of a program with Orangewood Pals, a support group for Orangewood Children’s Home in Orange.

Thompson spoke to about 100 kids ages 5 to 17. After that, he and others from Pimco broke into groups to spend time at crafts, eating ice cream, playing basketball, giving manicures and playing games.

Thompson, whose company manages bonds worth more than $800 billion, talked about his job.

“What do you think a CEO worries about?” he asked the kids.

Don’t be lazy, don’t be late and make money were some of the answers.

“I worry about those things,” Thompson said. “But I worry most that we make sure we follow the rules, we do things right so people believe in us. People are going to give us their money and pay us to make that money get bigger. They have to trust us.”

Thompson also fielded questions.

“Do you need to wear clean clothes to work that are not ripped?” a 9-year-old asked.

Orangewood Pals members raise money and donate time to help Orangewood Children’s Foundation, which runs Orangewood Children’s Home for abused, neglected or abandoned kids.
