Gateway Recalling 14,000 Laptop Batteries

Irvine’s Gateway Inc. said Tuesday it’s recalling 14,000 batteries for its laptop computers because of possible fire danger.

Gateway is voluntarily recalling the batteries and is working with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission on the issue, the company said.

Gateway has received four reports of battery packs overheating, causing minor damage, according to the Associated Press.

No injuries were reported.

Gateway is exchanging the batteries, which were shipped as part of laptops or as backups.

The company said it’s working with its battery supplier to cover the cost of the exchange. It didn’t indentify the supplier.

In October, Gateway recalled some 35,000 lithium ion batteries containing battery cells manufactured by Sony Corp.

Gateway said “its direct costs will be limited to incidental expenses associated with administering the exchange program.”

Last year, Apple Inc., Dell Inc. and Lenovo Group Ltd. recalled millions of Sony batteries after reports of overheating.
