AEROSPACE

The Air Force certified Boeing Co.’s Delta IV rocket engine managed from Huntington Beach Boeing’s Irvine-based Connexion by Boeing unit was granted the first Federal Communications Commission license to offer in-flight Internet and other data services.

AUTOMOTIVE

Kia Motors America, Irvine, named former Hyundai Canada executive J.H. Lee as president while executive vice president Peter M. Butterfield added the chief operating officer title.

DEFENSE

Costa Mesa-based Ceradyne Inc. leased a 40,000-square-foot plant in Irvine to expand production by about 40%; the company plans to move production of diesel engine parts and orthodontic brackets to Irvine to free space for defense work at its 86,000-square-foot Costa Mesa site (see related story, page 6) Boeing Co., Northrop Grumman Corp. and Orbital Sciences Corp. were awarded $26 million to work on a vehicle to replace NASA’s aging space shuttles; Boeing’s Seal Beach unit was awarded $5.4 million to study crew-escape systems for the proposed spacecraft.

ENERGY

Southern California Edison wants to raise electricity rates 15% in 2003 to pay for repairs to power plants and lines and to cover energy costs since May 2000 Southern California Edison said it expects to get financing that will let it pay creditors in March Edison urged the Public Utilities Commission to decide who will serve Enron Corp. customers if the company is unable to Huntington Beach has to rewrite only part of a utility-tax ballot measure aimed at AES Corp.’s power plant after a judge reversed a prior rewrite ruling.

TECHNOLOGY

Lake Forest-based Western Digital Corp. expects to post a profit of about $7.5 million for the quarter ended Dec. 28, its first in three years; Western Digital workers received holiday bonuses Irvine-based Intersil Corp.’s wireless networking chips will be put in IBM Corp.’s NetVista personal computers … DisplayWorks, an Irvine-based trade show marketing firm, will produce some 100 exhibits for Hewlett-Packard Co. in 2002 . TRANSPORTATION

The Transportation Corridor Agencies voted to raise tolls for cash customers on OC tollroads in 2002 but will continue subsidizing drivers with electronic transponders.

Irvine-based Taco Bell Corp. opened a Taco Bell Grill test restaurant in Garden Grove serving “fresh Mex” cuisine Anaheim-based trash hauler Taormina Industries sued Costa Mesa’s Special Solutions Industries for alleged unfair competition in Special Solutions’ bid to break into the garbage and recycling business Christopher Joseph Slaughter, the 42-year-old chief financial officer of El Pollo Loco, Irvine, died after battling lymphoma Hispanics accounted for 48.3% of OC babies in 1998 and should account for half within five years, according to the University of California, Los Angeles.
