Managed by Kemper Sports Management. $75 a round Monday through Thursday, $85 on Friday, $95 on Saturday, Sunday and holidays (resident, twilight and other discounts). Black Gold, the recently opened golf course set atop the former Shell Oil Field, represents tradeoffs. It’s a well-designed course that plays tough, boasts impressive city vistas and elevation changes and poses challenging putts. However, it lacks some of the polish of the area’s top courses. Then again, it’s priced some $35 less than those courses, but still, it’s pricier than other OC municipal courses. It’s a long ride for South Countians, but worth checking out. North County residents, on the other hand, might find this a course they enjoy visiting again and again.
