Irvine-based Elpac Electronics Inc., a maker of power supplies and other electronics, has been acquired, the company said on Monday.
Chicago’s International Components Corp., which has about 1,500 workers assembling battery chargers and other battery products, picks up about 200 employees from Elpac.
Elpac counts an estimated $20 million in yearly revenue.
The companies said they don’t expect layoffs.
Gordon Benhard, Elpac’s former owner and chief executive, becomes a part-time consultant until the end of the year.
Next year, he will only be tapped on an as-needed basis.
“I was reaching a point in life where I was looking at a retirement program,” Benhard said.
Marshall Wright, Elpac’s chief operating officer, is set to continue in his role and report to Stephen McClure, chief executive of International Components.
“The companies will operate as independent companies as they have in the past, but we will synchronize the marketing efforts a little bit,” said Michael Davis, executive director of business development for International Components.
With the acquisition, International Components, whose customers include Canon Inc. and RadioShack Corp., gets its own power supply maker, something it didn’t have before.
The buy also moves International Components into a couple of growing markets, medical equipment and handheld devices, company officials said.
Elpac was founded in the 1960s and becomes part of a company that’s about four times its size, Benhard said.
Both companies have global operations with International Components operating sites in Europe, India and China. Elpac has sites in China and Mexico.
