Condos, Shops Get Fullerton Nod

Fullerton’s Planning Commission has approved a condominium and stores development that includes what would be the tallest building in the city’s bustling downtown.

The commission voted 4-3 to approve Amerige Court, a 132-unit condo project with stores underneath.

Huntington Beach-based Pelican Center LLC and John Laing Homes of Newport Beach are developing Amerige Court, construction of which is estimated to cost $80 million.

The project would be the largest for the city’s downturn, an urban hub of restaurants and shops along Harbor Boulevard.

The developers and city planners see the project as part of the area’s evolution. It would bring homeowners and more shops alongside some 40 restaurants and bars that are a big weekend draw.

Amerige Court has faced criticism over design, height and the impact on area businesses during construction.

The City Council is set to consider the project on Nov. 21, according to Rob Ferrier, the city’s redevelopment manager.

If approved, Amerige Court could see initial construction around March and finish in stages in 2008 and 2009.
