THEY WILL NEVER LEARN. NO MATTER HOW MANY SHAKE-UPS THEY suffer, no matter how many readers they lose, no matter how many TV shows identify “The O.C.” as a unique community, the Los Angeles Times is simply incapable of regarding Orange County as anything more than an afterthought.
The latest example of this tunnel vision was a Times editorial last week touting the city’s bid to lure an NFL franchise to the Los Angeles Coliseum. What did the editorial writers have to say about the city of Anaheim’s competing offer to the NFL? A half sentence!
If the deep thinkers on Spring Street prefer a football team close to their office over one in the next county, that’s fine. But for the paper to treat Anaheim as if it were Poughkeepsie, N.Y., instead of a valued part of its home market, well, there’s one reason the Times’ circulation is in near free-fall.
To be fair, Times columnist Steve Lopez covered both cities’ proposals in his swat at the NFL last week.
So I guess that’s a reason to keep tolerating the Times.
