A top technology chief at Broadcom Corp. has left the chipmaker to join Canada’s Nortel Networks Corp. as the networking gear maker’s new chief technology officer.
John Roese has been vice president and chief technology officer for Broadcom’s networking technologies unit.
Chips for boosting the flow of data on networks is Broadcom’s traditional strength, though the company has expanded into consumer areas of late, including wireless networking and digital music players.
Networking was about a third of Broadcom’s revenue in the first quarter.
Roese is the inventor on 16 granted and pending patents in location-based networking and other areas of communications.
“In John I have found both a technology visionary and a results-oriented leader with a proven track record in driving technology strategy, product line rationalization and engineering process realignment,” said Mike Zafirovski, chief executive of Nortel. “He will play a pivotal role on the team as we work together to drive leadership in next-generation mobility, enterprise infrastructure, and services and applications.”
