Fullerton-based Beckman Coulter Inc. said Wednesday that it is buying a genomic service business for $17 million.
Beckman, a maker of medical testing instruments and supplies, said it was buying Cogenics from drug developer Clinical Data Inc. of Newton, Mass. Beckman said the deal is expected to close later this month.
Cogenics provides genomic services to drug companies, biotechnology companies, National Institutes of Health agencies, researchers and agricultural companies and agencies.
Clinical Data said it sold Cogenics in order to concentrate on its core business of developing drugs.
Genomics, or the study of human genes, is a major Beckman push in its life science unit.
In a release, Beckman said that adding Cogenics complements its Agencourt Biosciences unit. Agencourt provides genomic services and nucleic acid purification products.
Beckman bought Agencourt in 2005 for $140 million, its first deal after Scott Garrett took over as chief executive from John Wareham.
