AROUND THE COUNTY

Compiled by Kelly Ryan

ALISO VIEJO

A medical office building is planned on Liberty near Aliso Viejo Town Center. Irvine-based ACS Development Group Inc. is developing Journey Medical Plaza, which is set to be complete later this year. Plans call for a two-story building with 20,000 square feet and 110 parking spaces above and below ground. Irvine’s LPA Inc. designed the building with suites to be accessible through a central open hallway in the middle of the building. Brokers at the Irvine office of Lee & Associates say they haven’t seen any other medical buildings planned or under construction in Aliso Viejo after the rush of the past few years.

DANA POINT

The Planning Commission has approved a small office and housing development to go up near Camino de Estrella and Camino Capistrano. Developer Pat Meek, who operates Logan Homes in Dana Point and has owned the lot since 2002, said the project is waiting for financing before starting construction. It doesn’t require additional City Council approval. This is the latest of several mixed-use projects Meek’s done in the city. Plans call for a 3,000-square-foot office space on the first floor with a 1,300-square-foot housing suite above that. The design includes a rooftop balcony with an ocean view. Construction could begin in six months if financing comes through and be completed a year after that. Logan Homes builds custom and tract homes across the county.

IRVINE

Hicks Canyon Elementary School is building a classroom building and a separate multipurpose room at its campus near Culver Drive and Irvine Boulevard. Last year Hicks Canyon grew more than any other school in the Tustin Unified School District. The 12-room classroom building is set to be equipped with computerized writing boards and projection equipment. The multipurpose room will allow for 300 children to gather for assemblies. More than 60 parking spaces should allow easier access for teachers and parents. District officials say construction is on schedule to be finished before students begin school in September. Funding for the $8 million project comes from bond measures, parents’ contributions and the Tustin Public Schools Foun-dation. The school district has several other projects planned for the future and some are now under construction,Orchard Hills opens later this year.

LOS ALAMITOS

The Orange County Flood Control District is building a Los Alamitos Pump Station near Pacific Coast Highway and Seal Beach Boulevard. The facility replaces an existing 50-year-old storm water pump station. The station provides flood protection for nearby residents of Leisure World. The existing facility was overrun by rain storms in 1995 and needs to be upgraded for big storms in the future. The station increases pumping capacity from 450 to 800 cubic feet per second. The construction contractor is SSC Construction in Corona. The project should cost about $22 million and is expected to be finished by October. One more Orange Coun-ty pump station is in the planning phase now. The Haster Basin Pump Station in Garden Grove should cost about $26 million to build.

MISSION VIEJO

A Sonic fast-food restaurant is nearing completion at Los Alisos Boulevard and Jeronimo Road. Mission Viejo-based Coast to Coast Commercial LLC was formed in 2007 and has an agreement with Sonic Corp. to be the exclusive developer of restaurants in Orange and Los Angeles counties. Currently the only other Sonic restaurant in the county is in Anaheim and is about 20 years old. The 1,600-square-foot Mission Viejo restaurant will open in June. Coast to Coast has three more lined up in other cities pending approval. Richard Wesselink runs Coast to Coast along with sons Brandon and Devon and partner Steve Jones. Eleven Western Builders is the contractor with Jacobs Engineering Group Inc. is the designer.
