Costa Mesa-based Guthrie Development is redeveloping part of Pasadena-based Ameron International Corp.’s Brea operation at 201 N. Berry. Guthrie is remaking eight acres of industrial space into eight small industrial buildings for sale. Ameron, an industrial pipe supplier, had 15 acres in Brea and sold off nine for redevelopment earlier this year. The company still has operations on about five acres and about 40 workers in Brea.






La Foresta, a housing development planned on Unocal Corp.’s former Brea campus, is nearing public review. Some 1,200 homes and 110,000 square feet of stores, restaurants and offices are planned at Unocal’s former research center site. Another 250 homes, including apartments and townhomes, are being planned for an area alongside the nearby Birch Hills Golf Course. Construction of a community spanning both parcels should start early next year, with four local developers working with landowner Chevron Corp. Chevron acquired the land in its 2005 buy of El Segundo-based Unocal. The site is set to include homes geared toward people 55 and older, housing that city and development officials say is lacking in Brea and North County. The empty 120-acre Unocal site is near Imperial Highway and Valencia Avenue. Unocal had operations there for more than 50 years. The company’s research center at the site was shuttered about a decade ago.

Teddy Roosevelt would be proud. Construction on an Outdoor Education Center at Irvine Lake in the hills above Tustin and Orange is set to start in February. Billed as a “gateway to the outdoors,” the center is set to host camps for kids, including one for mining, ranching and astronomy. The center is being built on land given by The Irvine Company eight years ago. Irvine-based homebuilder Standard Pacific Corp. is providing labor and other resources. Several other builders and companies,nearly 50 in all,are offering labor and materials to the project. More than 25 buildings are slated to go up on the land, including a conference center, a dining hall, bunkhouses and a ranger’s home. A “fabricated mine” also is in the works. Various groups are planning to make use of the 210-acre site, including the Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, YMCA, Boys and Girls Clubs, Orangewood Acres, Camp Fire Girls and Orange County School Districts.

There’s bound to be controversy when Wal-Mart comes to town. A proposed store at 9852 Chapman Ave., west of Brookhurst Street, is drawing fire from residents and businesses. Wal-Mart Stores Inc. plans to build a 173,157-square-foot store on 10 acres. City officials are waiting for an environmental impact report before moving ahead. According to the plans, the store will be two levels with parking at ground level and the store on the second story.

The City Council gave the go-ahead to Newport Beach-based Makar Properties LLC for its Pacific City project, a 191,000-square-foot development near the main pier. Plans include a luxury hotel, 163,000 square feet of shops, restaurants and 516 condominiums above parking garages. Makar also plans to put up 117 affordable homes, design and build a water treatment system for runoff and put up a 45,000-square-foot senior center to be owned by the city.

The Promenade Shops and homes are going up at Dos Lagos, a 534-acre development of shops and homes. Last month, stores Anthropologie, Chico’s, Coach, Coldwater Creek, J. Jill, Eddie Bauer, Talbots, White House Black Market and Z Gallerie opened at the Promenade. Restaurants such as Citrus City Grille, Miguel’s, RA Sushi, Taps and T.G.I. Friday’s also opened, along with a 15-screen movie theater. The center of The Promenade overlooks two lakes and an outdoor amphitheater, which is set to hold concerts. Memphis-based Poag & McEwen Lifestyle Centers LLC developed The Promenade. They worked with Temescal Canyon Properties-8 LLC. Also at Dos Lagos, homes by Taylor Woodrow Homes are under construction. Dubbed Owen’s Cove, the housing development includes some townhomes and single-story attached senior homes.
