TAKING THE ARTE MORENO APPROACH TO MARKETING, WE SEE ENDLESS possibilities:
Another hit for Fox TV: “The O.C. of L.A.”
Another reality show for MTV: “Laguna Beach: the Real Los Angeles.”
Mayor Hahn will love this one: Los Angeles International Airport of Irvine.
And turnabout is fair play. If the Angels are going to spread their wings, shouldn’t the Dodgers expand their name and geographic reach, too?
We suggest:
The Anaheim Dodgers of Los Angeles.
For the newly crowned collegiate football champions, here’s a name that more specifically recognizes their loyal alumni and fan base here:
The Orange County University of Southern California of Los Angeles Trojans,OCUSCLAT, for short.
Finally, let’s not forget the area’s only active professional hockey team. It could broaden its appeal with a name change to Long Beach-by-Orange County Ice Dogs of Greater Los Angeles.
Gag writers and other wits are having a field day with “Los Angeles Dodgers of Anaheim”:
Jay Leno of NBC’s “Tonight Show” quipped, “That just rolls off the tongue, doesn’t it? Good luck getting that on a sweatshirt. They say having the name Los Angeles will boost attendance. Yeah, I’ll mention that to the Los Angeles Raiders and L.A. Rams and the L.A. Avengers.”
Keith Olbermann of MSNBC’s “Countdown” said the name change is “disproving the theory that you can’t be in two places at once.”
And ESPN’s Brian Kenny opined, “You cannot serve two masters but you can milk two markets.”
Come to think of that, maybe that’s the silver lining for OC in what is otherwise an insult to its reputation.
The jokes are an acknowledgment that OC really is a place of its own, there is a there here. And people are hearing about it.
There hasn’t been this much attention paid to OC,outside of TV shows, since, well, the Anaheim Angels won the championship.
