An appeals court Monday denied the city of Anaheim’s bid to overturn Arte Moreno’s name change of the baseball team.
The 4th District Appellate Court in Santa Ana denied Anaheim’s appeal, allowing the team to keep the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim moniker until a lawsuit brought by the city starts in November.
The appeal was an attempt to overturn the OC Superior Court’s rulings against the city, when Anaheim twice tried to get injunctions barring the name change.
The city’s suit charges the name change violates the team’s 1996 lease at Angel Stadium of Anaheim, which was struck with prior owner Walt Disney Co.
In March, the appeals court urged the city and the team to work out the issue outside court.
The two reportedly talked about a settlement, which proved unsuccessful.
