A Register Lament; Doti’s Ascent; Adams Disses Bar’s Bent

A Register Lament; Doti’s Ascent; Adams Disses Bar’s Bent

OC INSIDER by Rick Reiff

A Register veteran, commenting on the board turmoil and executive shakeup at parent company Freedom Communications: “You would think that the family would be pouring champagne on themselves because they beat the L.A. Times. So what do they do to celebrate? They basically set the barn on fire” …

John Adams has a lot going in his bid to replace Superior Court Judge Ronald C. Kline, who is stepping down to fight child-sex charges,a catchy name, a pleasant demeanor, a slew of GOP endorsements, a knack for campaigning and more than three times the March write-in votes of his opponent on the fall ballot, Gay Sandoval. One thing Adams won’t have is the OC Bar Association’s seal of approval. He took the unusual step of declining to participate in the bar’s candidate-evaluation process. Sandoval agreed to the questionnaire-interview-background drill and voters should know by mid-October what the bar thinks of her. Adams, a businessman for most of his career, said he believes the evaluation process favors litigators and wouldn’t flatter his record as a lawyer who provides advice. Meanwhile, Adams told the Insider that his failure to file a form with the secretary of state, an oversight he said he’s correcting, is the reason there are several suspended business licenses in his name. Adams earlier blamed an oversight for a biographical entry on his Web site that incorrectly claimed he was a Santa Ana lawyer during an eight-year stretch when he was actually suspended from legal practice for nonpayment of his bar dues Campaign advisor Adam Probolsky contended Adams is the target of a desperation smear campaign by “ultra-liberal” Sandoval: “She’s doing nothing but attacking Adams on petty business issues from years ago” …

Then he cruised around Greece with wife-professor Lynne Pierson Doti and Chapman chairman Donald and DeeDee Sodaro on Ambassador George and Julia Argyros’ yacht. He returned home to help Dean Parham Williams celebrate the law school’s ABA accreditation. Now fall semester is here …

The evening bash, benefiting Kidworks in Santa Ana, is hosted by Tea House Gang, whose party boys include real estate vets John Parker, Dan Donahue and Bob Howard. Call (949) 721-0711 … Flush with success: Reuters reports that “In the Toilet,” an exhibit of hand-painted potties from Loretta Alvarado’s How Original! gallery in Laguna Beach, has attracted a corporate donation,a year’s supply of toilet paper from Kimberly-Clark Corp.
