Summer Travel Extended In PacSun-Volcom Campaign

The summer is all but gone, but two Orange County-based brands are offering a chance to keep it alive in a social media contest.

Anaheim-based Pacific Sunwear of California Inc. and Volcom Inc. in Costa Mesa are asking their fans to take a picture of something they’re “true to,” then post it to their Instagram accounts with the #imtruetothis hashtag. PacSun will notify the winner on Sept. 3 by commenting on the “most visually compelling entry.”

Volcom announced the contest on its YouTube channel in a one-minute video that uses imagery from its new branding campaign, True To This, which kicked off last week. The video opens with a young woman floating in the water and transitions to a skater gliding down a dark street. The footage also shows a narrow, white strip of text, which sets up the theme for the contest: “There is a light somewhere begging to be followed, calling from distant horizons in your mind, tell us about it. What are you true to?”

The video also features Volcom athletes Ryan Sheckler, Quincy Davis, Pat Moore and David Gonzales, who provide details about the social media promotion.

Got Breakfast?

The California Milk Processor Board is hoping that this fall students will pick up a healthy eating habit along with the latest back-to-school styles.

The San Clemente-based nonprofit group, which commissioned the famous “Got Milk?” ad campaign, has partnered with 15 school districts across the state for its 7th Annual Got milk? Breakfast Challenge.

The districts—including Huntington Beach Union and Santa Ana Unified in Orange County—will compete for a $3,000 prize, which will be awarded to the school that posts the biggest increase in breakfast and milk consumption among its students.

“We want to make eating breakfast fun while inspiring young people to form healthy habits,” Steve James, the board’s executive director, said in a news release. “This challenge allows rival schools to compete against each other, while instilling the messages of proper nutrition with milk.”

Vizio’s Web Presence

A local technology company is employing large-scale visuals and motion graphics to make sure its products are “easy to digest” online.

Irvine-based Vizio Inc. has redesigned its website, vizio.com, making it more “consumer-centric.” The site has a “responsive” layout that optimizes content across every screen size, from desktop to mobile. It also features tools that enable customers to find a store or comparison shop.

Freedom App

Freedom Communications Holdings Inc., a Santa Ana-based media company, has launched a news app last week for its flagship publication, the Orange County Register. The free app organizes articles by topics, cities or as breaking news, and allows users to read and share them free of charge. The app asks users to log in after several clicks, a request that can be easily bypassed.

The app’s features run contrary to the company’s strategy last year when it built a “hard paywall” that allowed online readers to see stories from wire or syndicated services but kept all local coverage off the table for anyone who didn’t have a subscription.
