Register Parent to Cut 100 Jobs

Santa Ana-based Freedom Communications Holdings Inc. will cut about 100 positions, including executives, according to a report today in the company’s flagship publication, the Orange County Register.

The cuts will come at both daily newspapers Freedom owns—the Press-Enterprise in Riverside and the Register in Santa Ana. Neither of the newspapers’ newsrooms will be affected, Freedom said.

OC Register Magazine will fold, joining OC Metro, which ceased publication last month, the report said.

Register Publisher Rich Mirman said the cuts will be made because Freedom is losing money and, “we need to make (the company) profitable.”

The report said Freedom has laid off staff three times this year and has had trouble delivering newspapers to subscribers.

It has closed, scaled back or sold publications, this year, and struck a deal to sell its headquarters building in September for an estimated $27 million.
