Modern Luxury, the parent publisher of Modern Luxury Orange County magazine, bought a competing publisher, GreenGale Publishing LLC, which expands its stable of luxury lifestyle titles.
Modern Luxury Orange County has a Costa Mesa office and a distribution of about 40,000; Modern Luxury is based in Atlanta. GreenGale is a Nevada-based LLC with a publishing office in New York.
Modern Luxury had 67 titles; GreenGale had 17. The combined company reaches 24 markets, according to Modern Luxury, which says it has more than 5 million readers, according to its LinkedIn listing.
Titles tap luxury readers with general city magazines, and niche markets in those cities—weddings, interior design, men’s magazines, and luxe lifestyle, as well as two that cover high-end watches.
Some titles from the two companies overlap and it wasn’t known whether any publications would be combined, but Modern Luxury Chief Executive Michael Dickey said in an email his goal is “to keep all the magazines up and running” and increase sales and editorial staff.
The publisher launched a Silicon Valley edition of Modern Luxury last year and recently rebranded its Weddings magazines, which also segment by submarket. The publisher said in December it will begin publishing for Palm Beach, Fla., in November of this year.
Atlanta-based Dickey Publishing Inc. bought Modern Luxury in 2010 for about $25 million, a news report said.
MLM had about 26 titles at the time and three years earlier had sold for $243 million, and then had transferred to lenders as part of a $120 million debt default, prior to its purchase by Dickey, two trade journals said.
