Orange County’s media landscape has one less voice in the mix—at least for now.
The Orange County Register’s glossy Coast magazine has temporarily halted its print run.
While some staffers aired their goodbyes publicly on social media, Register owner Southern California News Group clarified the print edition hasn’t been put to bed for good just yet.
Said a spokesperson for the media company: “The monthly print edition of Coast magazine is on hiatus. We will evaluate its future once the businesses and events that historically supported the publication are able to safely resume their normal operations.”
It’s not the only local publication that’s been hit by the impact of COVID-19. Folio magazine was first to report a rejiggering last month of Modern Luxury Media’s staff at the top of the editorial masthead, with several editors-in-chief departing. Riviera magazine is part of that group; its July edition was light on local news and featured more national items culled from other regions.
It appears some of the staff of Coast (not to be confused with Orange Coast magazine) didn’t get the memo on the hiatus.
Former Managing Print and Digital Editor Jenn Tanaka, who remains on the Coast website as a columnist, said goodbye to the magazine in late June and confirmed the magazine’s closing to her follower base.
Executive Editor Samantha Dunn called it the end of an era last month.
Coast “remains a valued brand in our portfolio and stories continue to be available online,” the spokesperson said.
The publisher maintains a Coast landing page where the June issue, its last for now, is being touted with some new content continuing to be posted.
