Publisher and trade-show producer Teresa Ybarra McIntosh died of cancer on Oct. 11 at her home in Newport Beach.
She was 69.
McIntosh was co-publisher of Boating World Magazine, Sea Magazine, The Log Newspaper and Editor & Publisher magazine. She also was co-producer of the Newport Boat Show and the Lido Yacht Expo.
McIntosh and her husband, Duncan McIn-tosh, were married for 26 years, and business partners in Irvine-based Duncan McIntosh Co. for 32 years.
She was born in 1942 and grew up in Chino. She worked at a variety of jobs in her youth, including stints as a singing waitress and as a bilingual ambassador guide at Disneyland. She later worked for a year on a Hopi Indian reservation in the Volunteers in Service to America (VISTA) program, teaching second graders and instructing Hopi women in nutrition and health.
McIntosh attended Long Beach State University and the University of California, San Diego, where she earned her degree.
Balboa Bay Club
McIntosh later worked as a hairdresser at the Balboa Bay Club and eventually opened her own beauty shop. She met Duncan, at the time a sailboat dealer in Newport Beach, while working with him on the Newport Boat Show, which he started in the 1970s.
He eventually hired her as general manager of the Newporter-Mesa News, a community newspaper he also owned.
The two became business partners in 1979, when they launched Waterfront magazine for Southern California boating enthusiasts. They also started the Lido Yacht Expo and produced occasional boat shows in San Diego and Marina del Rey.
The couple purchased Sea Magazine in 1985 after its former publisher announced the western boating magazine would close. It was combined with Waterfront magazine two years later. Sea Magazine is now a leading publication in its market, with a monthly circulation estimated at more than 50,000.
In the 1990s, the McIntoshes launched additional titles, including a national trailer-boating magazine called Go Boating that merged with Boating World when Duncan McIntosh Co. acquired the older publication in 2008.
The Log, E & P
In 2004, Teresa and Duncan purchased The Log Newspaper and refocused its coverage of Southern California boating news. They purchased Editor & Publisher, the 125-year-old journal of the newspaper industry, in 2010. The publication shifted from a weekly to monthly publishing schedule and has put a new emphasis on its website.
Teresa is survived by husband Duncan; sisters Melinda Ybarra Truax and Irene Ochoa; brothers, Tony Ybarra and Eddie Marchan; 14 nieces and nephews; 18 grandnieces and grandnephews; Duncan’s children, Scott McIntosh, Michelle Murray and Steve Banta; and godchildren, Melinda’s sons Matthew and Michael Truax.
A celebration of her life is scheduled for Nov. 10 at 4 p.m. at the Balboa Pavilion.
