A recent deal between Lake Forest-based lock maker Kwikset and a computer hardware manufacturer shows that business worked both ways at the 2012 International Consumer Electronics Show that took over Las Vegas last week.
Kwikset struck a partnership deal with Los Angeles-based Belkin International Inc. for technology that’s expected to help it make headway on an initiative to develop a remote-lock system.
Kwikset is a unit of New Britain, Conn.-based Stanley Black & Decker Inc. The Kwikset brand had been under the umbrella of Farmington, Conn.-based Emhart Corp., until Emhart was acquired by Black & Decker for about $2.8 billion in 1989. Stanley Works bought Black & Decker for $4.5 billion in 2010.
Kwikset and faucet maker Pfister are part of the parent company’s Hardware and Home Improvement Group in Lake Forest, along with hardware manufacturer Baldwin Hardware Corp.
Stanley Black & Decker does not break out sale figures for the locally based units.
Kwikset manufactures door locks and hardware, including knobs, levers and electronic keyless locks for residential and light commercial uses.
The company’s remote-lock initiative includes a new product line it calls the Home Connect lock integration system. Current offerings include door locks that tap into wireless connections inside a home, such as security systems and lighting.
Kwikset executives pitched the new line at CES.
Belkin makes connectivity devices, such as routers and transfer cables, and other accessories for the commercial and consumer markets. Their deal will give Kwikset access to Belkin’s WeMo technology, which also was introduced at CES.
WeMo devices are power outlet adapters that utilize wireless networks. The gadget and its complementary smart phone application allow users to control parts of their homes remotely from any Internet-connected phone.
Kwikset’s focus on home security, coupled with the WeMo technology, is expected to prompt the development of products that would allow users to monitor and control door locks remotely from a smart phone.
