Edison Spells Out San Onofre Layoffs

Southern California Edison will cut 600 nonunion jobs this summer at the San Onofre nuclear power plant.

The company issued layoff notices to workers last week. It also said it will reduce the San Clemente plant’s workforce from 1,500 to 400 by next year as it permanently closes the facility, which used to supply more than 1 million Southern California customers with electricity.

The plant has been closed since January 2012 following a small radioactive leak from a steam generator that revealed unusually fast tube wear.

Southern California Edison laid off more than 700 employees last summer. The latest layoffs will take place over the next two months.

The company said it will work with unions on transition plans during the process of the staff reduction.
