Morton Joins Anaheim Convention Center

California native Thomas Morton has been named executive director of convention, sports and entertainment for the city of Anaheim.

He replaces Greg Smith, who retired last fall. Morton will oversee all activities at the Anaheim Convention Center and contractual relationships with management companies at Honda Center, The Grove of Anaheim and Angel Stadium of Anaheim.

Morton comes to Anaheim from the Albuquerque Convention Center. Before that, he worked in management positions at the Forum in Inglewood, the Long Beach Convention and Entertainment Center and the Del Mar Fairgrounds in San Diego.

The move brings Morton back to a publicly owned and operated facility from a privately operated one.

Morton said the difference is primarily operational.

“The intent is still to make sure you’re taking care of clients and guests,” he said.

Morton inherited the task of planning the next Anaheim Convention Center expansion. He said his team is meeting with the developer to figure out how best to move forward in a difficult economy.

“We need the meeting and flexible space,” he said.

The expansion would add roughly 250,000 square feet of flexible meeting space along with at least one hotel with restaurant and retail space.

Morton said having a Convention Center staff that has a long history with the building is helping him get up to speed on all the issues involved. He expects Anaheim to continue to position itself as a leading convention destination.

“Within the industry, Anaheim is well respected across the country for the progressive nature of the city,” he said.

Morton, who grew up in San Diego, plans to live in Anaheim with his wife and young daughter. Another daughter is due in August.

The Mortons share their home with a Labrador retriever. Morton said his spare time is pretty much focused on family these days and expects Disneyland will be a frequent destination for his brood.
