Mason Joins Business Journal as Managing Editor

Mike Mason is back at the Orange County Business Journal, this time as the paper’s managing editor.

Mason, 34, was the Business Journal’s technology reporter in 1999 and 2000 before heading to San Francisco to work for BridgeNews covering broadband and wireless.

He replaces Roger Bloom, who left to join law firm Rutan & Tucker LLP as marketing director.

Mason most recently comes from the news division of San Francisco-based Scudder Weisel Capital, a venture of Scudder Venture Investments and Thomas Weisel Partners, where he was an editor.

Mason earned his Series 7 brokerage and Series 24 principal licenses.

Prior to his first Business Journal stint, Mason was a reporter at the Palisadian-Post in Pacific Palisades and worked for four years at the Pilgrim Group, a Los Angeles-based mutual fund manager that’s now part of ING Groep NV. After Scudder Weisel closed its doors last year amid the technology downturn, Mason spent five months traveling the globe with his girlfriend, Amy Doan, who is a freelance writer and part-time Web editor for the Orange County Register. The two spent time in Spain, Greece, Egypt, Australia, New Zealand and the Cook Islands.

An avid hockey fan, Mason is enjoying the resurgence of his hometown Toronto Maple Leafs and can be found watching the Leafs’ playoffs games at Trophy’s Sports Grill in Newport Beach, his adopted hometown.

Mason has a bachelor’s in economics and philosophy from Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario.
