It took 33 years, but Marblehead Coastal, a 313-home development in San Clemente, has received final approval from the California Coastal Commission to begin construction.
Irvine-based SunCal Cos. is master developer on the oceanfront property.
SunCal paid $195 million for the 248-acre site, just off the San Diego (I-5) Freeway, in June. It is one of the last coastal locations available to build houses in Southern California.
The site will include a retail complex, Plaza San Clemente, which is being developed by Newport Beach’s Craig Realty Group and SDC Partners Ltd.
A retail outlet mall also is in the planning stages, along with a 130-room hotel.
Grading at the site is under way. Model homes are expected in late summer 2007.
