Broadcom, Qualcomm Near Deal on Patent Suit

Irvine’s Broadcom Corp. appears near a settlement with rival chipmaker Qualcomm Inc., just days before trial was set to begin in San Diego.

The two are locked in several disputes over chips used in cellular phones. One dispute was settled last month; three others are slated for trial this month.

Broadcom spokesman Bill Blanning said the case that was to begin Monday was taken off the court calendar based on comments from both companies that they were discussing dismissal of some of the claims.

“However the two companies have not yet reached a settlement with respect to the claims at issue,” Blanning said.

Last month San Diego-based Qualcomm settled with Broadcom on two pairs of patents relating to Bluetooth technology used in cellular telephones. No terms were disclosed.
