Taco Bell Corp.’s bean burritos will be the focal point of an upcoming campaign by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals.
The Norfolk, Va.-based animal rights organization will launch billboard and bus shelter ads near Taco Bell restaurants this week in Florida, Georgia and New York, in an effort to “promote the fast-food chain’s certified vegan food offering.”
The ads feature a somewhat angry “chicken’s face next to the words, Let’s All ‘Live Más.’ Would It Kill You to Get a Bean Burrito?”
Irvine-based Taco Bell says it’s the first quick-service restaurant to offer American Vegetarian Association-certified vegetarian food. It says it sells about 350 million vegetarian items a year, including the Bean Burrito, 7-Layer Burrito, Cantina Power Veggie Bowl and AM Grilled Taco with Egg and Cheese.
Taco Bell has more than 7,000 restaurants, including 300 locations in 26 countries outside of the U.S. It generates more than $9 billion in annual sales and is the largest restaurant chain based in Orange County, with 2,000 local employees.
PETA’s campaign recalls College Park, Ga.-based Chick-fil-A ads that feature cows urging consumers to eat more chicken.
