Chain’s Mascot Takes Wild Ride in Pursuit of Future

Look for Wienerschnitzel’s mascot, The Delicious One, running down the motocross race track.

The hot dog chain, owned by Irvine-based restaurant operator Galardi Group Inc., is sponsoring Joe Gibbs Racing, a North Carolina-based professional supercross and motocross team.

The deal is one of the first for Wienerschnitzel’s new Visionary Department, which focuses on “capturing tomorrow’s consumer.”

“We are expanding and want to introduce our brand to a younger audience,” said J.R. Galardi, son of the late Wienerschnitzel founder, John Galardi. “Supercross and motocross is a perfect match for our strategic plans. This partnership is a great way to kick off big things to come for Wienerschnitzel.”

The Delicious One, also known as TDO, will leave the racing to the pros—the brand’s logo debuted on the bikes of racers Justin Barcia, No. 51, and Weston Peick, No. 40, at the 2014 Monster Energy Cup on Oct. 18 at Sam Boyd Stadium in Las Vegas.

Bitter Ads

True Drinks Inc. in Irvine is promoting its AquaBall zero-calorie, sugar-free flavored water beverage for children with a series of video commercials featuring the slogan “Cut out the sugar, not the fun.”

The first three of 12 planned spots highlight children attempting to guess their yearly sugar intake. They pull a lever to get an answer and get showered by 2,790 lollipops or some 18,100 mini-marshmallows. The load of candy, according to the company, contains the same amount of sugar as drinking one glass of 100% juice containing 20 grams of sugar per serving per day for a year.

AquaBall’s president and chief executive, Lance Leonard, said in a statement that he “hopes these videos will strike a more serious chord with parents and shed light on the alarming overuse of sugar that drives the children’s beverage industry.”

True Drinks is traded over the counter and has a market value of about $12 million.

Journal of Quantum Studies

Chapman University has started Quantum Studies: Mathematics and Foundations, a quarterly academic journal that features submissions by physicists from around the world.

“We hope that this journal provides a home for those who think there are new worlds to be discovered by looking deeply into quantum mechanics,” Editor-In-Chief Yakir Aharonov, a Chapman physicist and a National Medal of Science recipient, wrote in the preface to the inaugural issue, which was published in September. “Our advice is: “Think, reconsider, explore, create deep questions, use paradoxes as a tool for understanding, and finally: publish in this journal!”

University Chancellor Daniele Struppa will serve as the journal’s managing editor along with Jeff Tollaksen and Fabrizio Colombo of Chapman’s Institute for Quantum Studies.
