Aliso Viejo-based Microsemi Corp. announced an agreement today to purchase a Santa Rosa chipmaker and also revealed plans to repurchase up to $100 million of its common stock.
The company said it will acquire Centellax Inc., which makes high-speed and RF chips and related components for the optical communications and Ethernet data markets.
Terms of the small deal weren’t disclosed, and the transaction is not expected to have a material effect on revenue or expenses, according to the company.
Microsemi said the repurchasing program allows the company to acquire any amount of common stock before Sept. 20. 2016.
The purchases will be funded from working capital.
Investors seemed to shrug off the news, as shares were up less than 1% at the close of trading, with a market value of about $2.53 billion.
It’s the second Ethernet-related buy in the past few months for Microsemi, an infrequent acquirer. In July, it purchased Cork, Ireland-based Mingoa Ltd. for an undisclosed sum.
The Irish company specializes in chip design geared to large-scale Ethernet operations.
Microsemi specializes in chips for the defense and aerospace industry that are used in timing products, as well as power, security and mission-critical applications.
