Irvine Architectural Firm Bought

Gkkworks, an Irvine-based architectural firm with 100 employees, has been bought by CannonDesign.

Terms of the deal weren’t disclosed.

The acquisition increases CannonDesign’s presence in Southern California, adding offices in San Diego and Pasadena in addition to Irvine. CannonDesign will have about 1,100 employees after the acquisition.

“Our merger with gkkworks is another step in expanding our West Coast partnerships but, more importantly, it will further expand CannonDesign beyond architecture and engineering solutions toward a fully integrated approach for our clients,” said CannonDesign Chief Executive Brad Lukanic, who is based in New York.

Gkkworks, founded in 1991 by Praful Kulkarni, has recently worked on projects such as Concordia University’s Nursing Science unit and the Midfield Satellite Concourse at Los Angeles International Airport.

“When we started gkkworks more than 26 years ago, our goal was to evolve into one of the most influential design and construction firms in the world,” Chief Executive Kulkarni said. “This merger helps us accomplish exactly that, while giving us access to some of the most creative design and construction experts in the world.”

Gkkworks ranked No. 21 on the Business Journal’s most recent list of architectural firms, reporting $6.2 million in Orange County billings for the 12 months ended June 30. It had 39 employees in Orange County, including nine architects.
