On Feb. 6, United Way Orange County celebrated nine decades of improving lives and strengthening the local community. The event was called “On the Road to 100, Honoring the Past and Imagining the Future.” The emcee, Orange County Register Vice President Steve Churm, presided over a who’s who of 360 community leaders and philanthropists.

The event, held at the Irvine Marriott, wove together a timeline highlighting significant national and local United Way events before unveiling FACE 2024, the vision for the future of Orange County to build a stronger community over the next decade.

Peter Ochs, chairman of Fieldstone Group, and his wife, Gail; Jerry Mattes, president of UPS West Region; and David Pyott, Allergan Inc.’s chief executive, were the event’s honorary co-chairs. Event underwriters included Seaview Investors LLC; Edwards Lifesciences Corp.; UPS; Western National Group; and Crowell & Moring LLP.

The Discovery Science Center in Santa Ana celebrated the groundbreaking of its $22.5 million expansion at a Jan. 29 ceremony. The center will add 40,000 square feet of exhibit space by March 2015.

The expansion will double the size of the current facility and increase attendance capacity to more than a million guests per year. The two-story building will include an education wing aimed at honing science, technology, engineering and math skills in students and teachers. It will include a hands-on simulation of a space mission control room, a 500-seat theater, a “healthy kitchen” exhibit with live demonstrations, and a natural resources pavilion to encourage conservation and recycling.

The expansion is being funded in part by donations and financed with a loan from Farmers & Merchants Bank.

More than 500 community leaders celebrated heart health at the Orange County Go Red For Women Luncheon on Feb. 7 at the Island Hotel in Newport Beach. The event raised $354,500 for the American Heart Association’s Go Red For Women campaign, designed to raise awareness of heart disease, the No. 1 killer of women in the U.S.

“Working for a company focused on heart valve innovations, I meet and hear many stories about patients … who become a part of me and remind me every single day that heart disease is their No. 1 killer,” said Christine McCauley, corporate vice president of human resources at Edwards Lifesciences.

The luncheon featured a presentation highlighting successes in the fight against heart disease, a silent auction, and a Q-and-A session about heart disease and stroke.

The luncheon was locally sponsored by presenting sponsor The Edwards Lifesciences Fund; heart of gold sponsors Datron, Specialized Marketing Services, and UC Irvine Health; silver sponsors Abbott Medical Optics and MicroVention Terumo; and bronze sponsors AMSolutions Group, Baxter Credit Union, Shook, Hardy & Bacon, St. Joseph Health and Roth Staffing Cos.
