AROUND THE COUNTY

Projects, developments and other activity in cities in and around OC

TUSTIN

A medical building is going up on El Camino Real near Newport Avenue. The two-story building is being developed by Ashok Mehta, who plans to operate his dental practice in a 2,500-square-foot office on the second floor. The bottom floor is set to be used by two other tenants. The plan calls for an underground parking structure with 19 spots. The medical building will replace a childcare center that was knocked down in April. The general contractor, Nathu Development, is set to handle tenant improvements for the dental office early next year. Simi Valley-based NG Patel Architects designed the building.

Public Storage, a storage space rental facility, is set to double its size on McFadden Avenue near the Costa Mesa (55) Freeway. The expansion is on land previously used for Public Storage’s pickup and delivery service, which ended in 2009. Plans call for adding 800 additional storage units for a total of about 1,800 spaces or 81,000 square feet. Construction started in July and is expected to finish early next year. The projected cost is $3.7 million. Pennsylvania’s GMI Contractors is handling construction. The architect is James Goodman Architecture in San Juan Capistrano.

The Diocese of Orange is looking to build a senior living facility on 7 acres of county land on Newport Avenue between Castlegate Lane and La Loma Drive. The proposed project, called The Springs at Bethsaida, calls for a two-story building with 138 living units, a dining hall and a medical care facility. An additional 19 free-standing units also are in the plans. The project has drawn community opposition with some seeing it as a violation of the neighborhood’s residential zoning designation. The land originally was intended to be the site of St. Cecilia Catholic Church when it was donated to the Diocese of Orange in the 1950s. The church eventually was built elsewhere with the land going unused since then. The diocese plans to take the proposal before the county at the end of the year.

FULLERTON

A franchisee of Irving, Texas-based Gold’s Gym International Inc. has opened a temporary gym as a permanent 40,000-square-foot facility goes up at Amerige Heights Town Center, a shopping center at Malvern Avenue and Gilbert Street. The finished gym is set to include a 25- meter pool, a cardio movie theater, cardio equipment with individual TVs, a boxing ring, a spa and a eucalyptus sauna. The gym is being developed in a former Bed Bath & Beyond store. The $6 million project began in August. The gym is expected to open early next year. The contractor is New York-based Ancor Inc. Bannick Architect of Van Nuys designed the building. The developer is New York-based Blanck Rock.

SANTA ANA

A medical office building is under construction on First Street and Andres Place. The 6,000-square-foot building is being designed for multiple tenants on two floors. A doctor who plans to run his practice from the building is the developer. The bottom floor is set to have 4,000 square feet of office space with 2,000 square feet on the top floor. Construction is slated to finish early next year and cost about $1 million. Michigan’s JGA Architecture designed the building. Cal-City Construction Co. of Cerritos is the contactor.

HUNTINGTON BEACH

A six-year renovation project is almost done at Huntington Beach High School on Main Street, south of Yorktown Avenue. The renovation included seismic retrofitting, American with Disabilities Act compliance upgrades, video screen installation, whiteboard replacements, new paint and flooring and the construction of two classroom buildings. Almost all of the renovations were funded by Measure C bonds. The project is expected to finish in November and cost $70 million. Irvine-based SMC Construction, Baldwin Park-based Angeles Construction and Cavecche Engineering & Construction in Los Alamitos are the primary contractors. The architects are PJHM Architects in San Clemente and Y’Deen Associates in Brea.
