Philharmonic Names President

The Philharmonic Society of Orange County in Irvine named Tommy Phillips president and artistic director, effective Oct. 1.

Phillips succeeds John Mangum, who left to become the executive director and chief executive of the Houston Symphony.

With over 15 years of experience in the arts, Phillips has held positions and consulted with orchestras such as the San Diego Symphony, San Francisco Symphony, Grand Rapids Symphony and Pacific Symphony.

He is also the co-founder of the international performing arts organization Black Cats Production Company.

Phillips’ “artistic excellence and community engagement will resonate with our audiences, and with his energy and enthusiasm, he will move the organization forward as we continue to build upon our 65 seasons of presenting the world’s finest orchestras and international artists,” Chairman Donna Kendall said in a statement.

The nonprofit has an annual budget of $5.2 million.
