García New President of Cal State Fullerton

Mildred García has been named president of California State University, Fullerton, effective after June 1.

The school had been searching for a permanent president since former President Milton Gordon announced his plans for retirement last September. Gordon officially stepped down earlier this month after nearly 22 years as president. Willie Hagan was named interim president, a post he’ll keep until García starts.

García has been president at Cal State Dominguez Hills since 2007. She is the first Latina president in the Cal State school system.

She was president of Berkeley College from 2001 to 2007, overseeing six campuses in New York and New Jersey.

She taught at Arizona State University and served as vice provost there before going to Berkeley.

García was appointed last year by President Obama to the President’s Advisory Commission on Educational Excellence of Hispanic Americans.
