California State University-Fullerton received a $5.8 million grant from the U.S. Department of Education for a five-year project in partnership with eight community colleges to increase the number of Hispanic and low-income transfer students who complete bachelor’s degrees in science, technology, engineering and mathematics and get jobs in these fields.
CSUF is partnering with community colleges in Orange and Los Angeles counties—including Orange Coast, Golden West and Santiago Canyon—for this program, known as “Project RAISE.” The university received about $1.2 million in funding for the first year of the program.
Students at the partner community colleges will receive both peer and mentor support from CSUF. They also can join summer research projects with CSUF faculty mentors. Those involved in summer research will receive a $5,000 stipend.
The project will support qualifying students to transfer to any four-year university, including training on a free, web-based resource called “Transferology” to help them identify transferable courses to a four-year degree program in science, technology, engineering or math.
Those who transfer to CSUF will receive priority registration and the opportunity for paid summer internships arranged by the Orange County Business Council and supported by local companies.
