Rivian Automotive Inc. is partnering with Uber to deploy up to 50,000 fully autonomous R2 robotaxis, with the first round of vehicles expected in 2028 (Nasdaq: RIVN).
Uber will invest up to $1.25 billion in the Irvine-based automaker through 2031, subject to certain milestones, with the goal of having a fleet of R2 robotaxis only available through its rideshare platform.
An initial $300 million investment has already been committed.
The first phase of deployment will include 10,000 robotaxis and is scheduled to begin in San Francisco and Miami in 2028. Beginning in 2030, Uber and Rivian will have the option to negotiate the purchase of up to 40,000 more R2 taxis.
The venture plans to launch the autonomous vehicles to 25 cities by 2031, eyeing Canada and Europe as well.
