Rivian to Launch First R2 Variant in Spring

Rivian Automotive Inc. has announced that the first R2 variant, featuring dual motors and all-wheel drive, will launch this spring (Nasdaq: RIVN).  

The Irvine-based automaker added that it will share more details such as pricing and style options on March 12.  

The R2 format was designed to be smaller and less expensive than the initial R1 electric vehicle and was previously expected to start at around $45,000.  

Rivian on Feb. 9 said the R2 vehicle had entered final validation, the last round of testing. For months, specialty-wrapped R2 prototypes have been seen driving around Orange County. 

“We’ve tested every aspect of the vehicle to ensure it performs both as a daily driver and as a vehicle that will take you off the beaten path,” Senior Director, Global Test and Development Peter Jacobsen said in a statement.
