Rivian Automotive Inc. has announced that the first R2 variant, featuring dual motors and all-wheel drive, will launch this spring (Nasdaq: RIVN). Â
The Irvine-based automaker added that it will share more details such as pricing and style options on March 12. Â
The R2 format was designed to be smaller and less expensive than the initial R1 electric vehicle and was previously expected to start at around $45,000. Â
Rivian on Feb. 9 said the R2 vehicle had entered final validation, the last round of testing. For months, specialty-wrapped R2 prototypes have been seen driving around Orange County.Â
“We’ve tested every aspect of the vehicle to ensure it performs both as a daily driver and as a vehicle that will take you off the beaten path,” Senior Director, Global Test and Development Peter Jacobsen said in a statement. Â
