June Sales Up for OC Automakers

Two of the four Orange County-based automakers beat the national sales pace for new vehicles in June, according to New Jersey-based market researcher Autodata Corp.

U.S. auto sales grew 3.9% last month, adding 1.47 million cars and light trucks and are on pace to reach 17.2 million for the year.

Hyundai Motor America in Fountain Valley sold 67,502 vehicles nationwide, 95 more than during the same period last year. The automaker’s sales so far this year are up 1.8% to 371,150 cars and light trucks.

Kia Motors America Inc. in Irvine reported selling 54,137 cars and SUVs, up 6.9% from a year earlier. Its year-to-date sales total 310,952, a 4.6% increase.

Kia Chief Operating Officer Michael Sprague cited design, technology, value, and the automaker’s positive performance in the annual J.D. Power Initial Quality Study for the results.

“Customers continue to turn to Kia in increasing numbers,” Sprague said in a statement.

Mazda North American Operations’ sales were up 3.9% to 27,223. The Irvine-based automaker is up 1.6% for the year, with 158,996 vehicles sold.

Cypress-based Mitsubishi Motors North America Inc. sold 7,963 vehicles—a 32.3% increase. The automaker’s year-to-date sales totaled 49,544, a 24.9% uptick over the same period last year.

U.S. auto dealers have sold 8.52 million vehicles so far this year, a 4.4% increase compared with the same six-month period last year.
