COVID-19 Hits March Auto Sales

March sales for local automakers tumbled on impact from stay-at-home and social distancing orders to stem the spread of COVID-19.

Hyundai Motor America Inc.’s March sales totaled 35,118 vehicles, down 43 percent. The company’s sales year to date stand at 130,875 vehicles, down 11.3%.

Kia Motors America Inc. sold 45,413 vehicles in March, off 18.6%. Sales for the Irvine automaker, year to date, are up nearly 1% to 137,945.

Irvine-based Mazda North American Operations reported March sales of 15,664 vehicles, off 41.8 percent from the year-ago period. Year-to-date sales are down 4.5% to 67,670.

Luxury automaker Genesis Motor America Inc. of Fountain Valley sold 969 vehicles in March, down 33.2%. The company’s sales for the year are down 5.9% to 3,955.

Average new vehicle prices nationally served as one bright spot for the month. Irvine-based Kelly Blue Book reported March’s average vehicle price rose 2.6% from a year ago to $37,736.
