Japan’s Terumo Buying Device Maker

Aliso Viejo-based medical device maker MicroVention Inc. is being bought by Japan’s Terumo Corp., the companies said Tuesday.

Terumo is paying cash for MicroVention. The price wasn’t disclosed. The buy is set to wrap up by the end of March.

MicroVention makes minimally invasive, catheter-based devices to treat cerebral aneurysms, or a ballooning of a blood vessel in the brain.

The company, which has federal approval for its products, has raised about $53 million in venture funding since its 1997 founding.

MicroVention’s key rival is Boston Scientific Corp.

Terumo makes drugs and a range of hospital products, including catheters, testing equipment and dialysis gear. The Tokyo-based company has yearly sales of about $2 billion.
