April proved challenging for OC automakers as sales fell despite extended warranties and deferred payment programs offered to ease consumer concerns—and costs—during the pandemic.
Fountain Valley-based Hyundai Motor America Inc. sold 33,968 vehicles in the month, down 39% from the year-ago period. The company’s Tucson compact SUV led unit sales with 8,438.
Irvine-based Kia Motors America Inc. sales fell 38.3% to 31,705; the high-performer was the Optima: 6,894 units of the sedan sold in April.
Mazda North American Operations, also in Irvine, saw a 44.5% decline in April sales to 10,940 vehicles. The company’s CX-5 crossover saw the most volume during the month with 5,220 sold.
Fountain Valley luxury automaker Genesis Motor America sold 806 vehicles, down 49.8% from a year ago. Sales of the G70 led the month, with 551 of the sedans sold.
