OC Automakers See Steep April Sales Drop

April proved challenging for OC automakers as sales fell despite extended warranties and deferred payment programs offered to ease consumer concerns—and costs—during the pandemic.

Fountain Valley-based Hyundai Motor America Inc. sold 33,968 vehicles in the month, down 39% from the year-ago period. The company’s Tucson compact SUV led unit sales with 8,438.

Irvine-based Kia Motors America Inc. sales fell 38.3% to 31,705; the high-performer was the Optima: 6,894 units of the sedan sold in April.

Mazda North American Operations, also in Irvine, saw a 44.5% decline in April sales to 10,940 vehicles. The company’s CX-5 crossover saw the most volume during the month with 5,220 sold.

Fountain Valley luxury automaker Genesis Motor America sold 806 vehicles, down 49.8% from a year ago. Sales of the G70 led the month, with 551 of the sedans sold.
