The yearly business plan competition at the University of California, Irvine, now has a name sponsor.
Newport Beach law firm Stradling, Yocca, Carlson & Rauth pledged an undisclosed amount to sponsor the competition, in which business school students work to come up with the best outline for a startup company.
Stradling, Yocca is set to provide prizes and money for running the contest.
The competition, run by the Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation at The Paul Merage School of Business, includes eight months of business plan development and workshops. It ends in a daylong contest among business plan teams.
The winning team gets $15,000. The runner-up gets $7,500. The third-place finisher gets $1,500.
The winner of last year’s contest was UniCom, a wireless chip designer.
“We’ve long supported the business plan competition at UCI in many ways, and we couldn’t think of a more logical step than stepping up our support and lending our name to it,” said Bruce Feuchter, a member of Stradling, Yocca’s executive committee.
Cal State Fullerton Hosts SEC Reporting Seminar
Scott Taub, deputy chief accountant at the Securities and Exchange Commission is set to talk at a Sept. 19 conference on SEC Financial Reporting at California State University, Fullerton.
Taub and others are expected to address stock compensation, transparency in financial reports and performance reporting at the conference, put on by Cal State Fullerton’s Center for Corporate Reporting & Governance.
Other speakers include Katherine Schipper, a Financial Accounting Standards board member, Seth Rosen, principal-in-charge of compensation and benefits at KPMG LLP, Marc Blythe, partner at Ernst & Young LLP and Cindy Alexander, the SEC’s assistant chief economist.

Allergan’s Pyott, Others Set for OC Forum Series
Allergan Inc. Chief Executive David Pyott and five other “mentors” are set to speak and interact with executives as part of the Orange County Forum’s Executive Leadership Series 2005.
The event is designed to give young executives a chance to hear from leading businesspeople and pose questions close-up.
Also set to speak are Orange County Register Publisher N. Christian Anderson III; Lucy Dunn, director of the California Department of Housing and Community Development; Judy Rosener, professor in UC Irvine’s Paul Merage School of Business; Santa Ana barbershop and bookstore owner Rueben Martinez; and former Congressman James Rogan, an attorney with Venable LLP.
The weekly breakfast sessions run from Sept. 29 through Nov. 10 at the Pacific Club, Center Club and University Club. Jo Ellen Allen, public affairs director for Southern California Edison, moderates an orientation reception Sept. 22.
