The S&P 500 rose 0.25% to 1,942.58 in midday trading Tuesday.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average was up 0.18% to 16,811.95, while the Nasdaq was up 0.50% to 4,342.88.
The yield on a 10-year Treasury bond rose 1.96% to 2.65%.
The price of gold was down 0.35% to $1,270.80.
HEALTHCARE
Irvine-based dental laser maker Biolase Inc. was up 22.87% to $2.31 following a recent legal defeat at the Delaware Supreme Court that led the company to revamp its board of directors today. Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Federico Pignatelli resigned from those roles and the board. Biolase appointed new board member Jeffrey Nugent interim CEO as a formal search began. Biolase counted a market cap of $86.9 million in midday trading.
Irvine-based device maker Edwards Lifesciences Corp. was up 4.97% to $82.34 and a market cap of $8.7 billion, on FDA approval of its Edwards Sapien XT less-invasive heart valve.
Irvine-based drug-maker Allergan Inc. was up 1.62% to $161.95 and a market cap of $48.2 billion on news that Valeant Pharmaceuticals International Inc. would begin direct solicitations of shareholder backing for its hostile takeover bid of the company.
TECHNOLOGY
Santa Ana-based software maker Iteris Inc. was up 7.28% to $1.93 and a market cap of $63.3 million. The company said it would help provide advanced traffic analytics, weather data, and a website for groups involved with Interstate 95, which runs from Maine to Florida.
