U.K. Device Maker Buys San Clemente Medical Software Company

Smith & Nephew PLC, a U.K.-based medical device maker, has bought San Clemente-based LifeModeler Inc. for an undisclosed price through its U.S. subsidiary, Smith & Nephew Inc.

LifeModeler makes software that allows medical device makers, hospitals shoe and golf club makers to use computers to test how designs would work on people.

Smith & Nephew said that it has worked with LifeModeler for more than 10 years, using the San Clemente company’s LifeMod human simulation software to develop several of its products.

Shaun McGuan, LifeModeler’s founder and chief executive, will continue to run LifeModeler as a Smith & Nephew unit. McGuan was honored by the Business Journal two years ago with an Excellence in Entrepreneurship luncheon award.
