AqueSys Inc., an Irvine medical device company, said Friday in a regulatory filing that it’s raised $7.5 million as part of a $35 million funding round.
AqueSys is working on a surgical device to treat glaucoma, an eye disease that damages the optic nerve and is a major cause of blindness.
The company didn’t disclose the source of its funding in its Securities and Exchange Commission filing.
AqueSys, which was founded in 2006, previously received investments from Accuitive Medical Partners, a Palo Alto-based firm, and the Innovation Factory of Duluth, Ga.
The Innovation Factory’s website says that AqueSys raised $6.9 million in a first round of funding and that it has been working on a second round worth $9 million.
It is not clear whether AqueSys’ newest funding is part of a second round indicated on the Innovation Factory’s website, according to Thousand Oaks-based news site SoCalTech.com.
The Innovation Factory has also invested in AcuFocus Inc., another Orange County eye device startup that is developing an implant to treat presbyopia, a condition that causes the eye to lose its ability to focus on near objects with age.
