There’s a 50% chance Honda Center will add a professional basketball team in the next five years, according to the chairman of the company that runs the Anaheim arena.
Honda Center and its Southern California location make it the “No. 1 option” for a basketball team looking to upgrade to a bigger market, said Michael Schulman, chairman of Anaheim Arena Management LLC, which manages the city-owned Honda Center.
Schulman, who’s also chief executive of Honda Center’s Anaheim Ducks hockey team, made the comments on Cable Business Journal, an executive interview show hosted by Business Journal Publisher Richard Reisman.
The Schulman episode started airing this week and continues through next month on local cable systems. It also will be up soon on www.ocbj.com.
Honda Center already hosts college basketball games and some Los Angeles Lakers exhibition games.
In 2008, Anaheim was in the running to land the Seattle SuperSonics before that team became the Oklahoma City Thunder.
Some speculate Honda Center could be a longshot consideration for Oakland’s Golden State Warriors.
Landing an NBA team is a key goal of Broadcom Corp. cofounder Henry Samueli and wife Susan, who own the Ducks and Anaheim Arena Management.
