Aliso Viejo Device Maker Raises $10M

Cianna Medical Inc., an Aliso Viejo maker of devices to treat breast cancer, said Tuesday that it completed a $10 million second round of financing.

Mitsubishi International Corp., a New York-based unit of Japan’s Mitsubishi Corp., participated in the funding, along with Emergent Medical Partners of Portola Valley, San Francisco-based Saints Capital, Fog City Fund of San Francisco and several private individuals.

Fog City was an initial investor in BioLucent Inc., which Cianna was spun off from in 2007. BioLucent, which makes a cushion used in mammography, spun off Cianna after it was bought for $70 million by Hologic Inc., a Massachusetts-based device maker.

Cianna said it a statement that it would use the money to step up commercializing its Savi device, which provides high-dose radiation therapy for women who’ve had lumpectomy surgery for breast cancer.

The funding brings Cianna’s total raised to $19 million. Cianna raised $9 million in a first round of funding last year.
