WHY: 13 children of Mexican grocery chain founders own and oversee Anaheim-based business started in 1980, with brothers Don Miguel and Oscar González as co-CEOs. Generates $1B in annual sales across 44 stores.  

IN THE NEWS: Opened 70,000-square-foot marketplace concept dubbed Mercado González in Costa Mesa last year, arguably the most notable and largest opening for the family since its original spot in Anaheim; new store includes more than 20 puestos, or food stands, indoor bar and fine-dining restaurant. 

NOTABLE: Three generations involved. Business Journal’s 2023 Businesspeople of the Year in retail sector; won Longevity Award at Family-Owned Business Awards in May.
