Chapman Buys Spectrum Buildings for Life Sciences Campus

Chapman University in Orange has purchased two buildings in the Irvine Spectrum in a $20 million deal to house the school’s new graduate health sciences programs.

School officials said about $24 million worth of renovations are expected before the buildings open in 2014.

The pair of buildings are currently known as the Jeronimo Technology Park and will be renamed Chapman University Health Sciences Campus. They will provide classrooms, offices and lab space for graduate students enrolled in physical therapy courses at the Crean School of Health and Life Sciences at Chapman’s Schmid College of Science and Technology.

The facilities also will be available to students in Chapman’s joint program with Keck Graduate Institute of Applied Life Sciences, part of the Claremont Colleges.

Chapman and Keck announced in February a partnership to launch a new biopharmacy school, combining Keck’s master and postdoctoral programs in biotechnology with Chapman’s computational sciences programs.

The purchase of the Irvine campus marks “a vital step forward for the future of Chapman University and our burgeoning health sciences programs,” according to President James Doti. “We took a look at which career fields would be in most demand in the future, and the health sciences dominated. By expanding in this area of study, we hope that our students will help to fill those jobs and contribute greatly to the future health needs of California and the U.S.”

Chancellor Daniele Struppa said the school is likely to add more programs in its physical therapy and biopharmacy programs, “probably beginning with a degree for physician assistants.”
