The S&P 500 rose 0.44% to 1,439.
The yield on a 10-year treasury bond was up 0.06% to 1.69%.
The price of gold rose 0.28% to $1,770 per ounce.
Shares of Newport Beach-based patent owner and licensing firm Acacia Research Corp. were up about 7% to $26 for a market value of about $1 billion.
Irvine-based Biolase Inc. rose about 15% to $2, for a market value of about $67 million,. The medical laser maker recently received U.S. and European Union regulatory approval for a new dental laser.
