Feds Provide $1M for Clean Energy Expo at Great Park

The Orange County Great Park Corporation Board has been awarded a $1 million grant from the U.S. Department of Energy to help stage a clean energy exposition next year at the former El Toro Marine base in Irvine.

The proceeds will be used to plan and implement XPO: Clean+Renewable+Efficient Energy Exposition and the Solar Decathlon, which challenges collegiate teams to design, build, and operate solar-powered homes.

The exposition will run from October 3 to October 13, marking the first time it will be longer than one day.

The Great Park accepted an initial dispersement of $375,000 from the energy department to fund programming and sponsorship planning, as well as a finalized site plan of the Solar Decathlon Village, where 20 collegiate teams will showcase their work.

The XPO will showcase technology, products, arts, education and business opportunities related to clean and renewable energy generation and efficient energy use.
